I was flabbergasted after reading this story. tuoitrenews.vn/society/16344/homeless-beggar-says-he-was-robbed-of-420001) Why someone would be carrying so much gold on their person...at the risk of getting robbed? 2) He made it through begging? 3) How did the robbers know where to look? Now everyone will become beggars knowing they can get rich like this guy. And teenagers will rob beggars knowing the beggars can be rich like this guy. Now hopefully people will think twice about just shelling out 1k or 2k notes to beggars. On a huge scale day in day out, they can amass a fortune. Rather, buy a bottle of water for around 8K and give it to a beggar to quench their thirst in the heat.

In the states it called "panhandling". The streets of many major cities have people with charity cans, men dressed in worn out army fatigues, so called church outreaches for the needy, women with their kids dressed in rags. etc. I confess, I used to always give money away to them out of pity. I still do, however, I just donate to well known charities that are not for profit. In VN, I would give my poor relatives money but behind my mom's and well to do relatives' backs. They would be furious if they knew.
I'm not surprised at all, and actually I think the old man had accumulated his wealth over the years. However, what does an 86 yrs old do with all that gold? He's estranged from his relatives, so where's it gonna go when he passes? Obviously, he doesn't trust the banks or he would have already deposited it for safe keeping. Not everybody who looks wealthy, actually are! I say cudos to the old thifty man.

I remember one time back in the States, I read those signs that said "will work for food", so I went and bought him a bag of apples. As I drove away, I looked in the mirror and saw him throw them away. With an attitude like that, I'm glad I didn't give him cash. If the 86 year old dies on the streets, you can bet whoever discovers his body will search him...and upon finding the treasure trove, will just pocket it. He should really keep it someplace safer. I am still amazed at how many stories I've read about people losing a fortune to robbers....who carries around that much cash/gold? Or people forgetting money in taxis (I think I just read a story in the US where a gambler in Vegas left behind $300,000 in a taxi). It was a good thing the Taxi driver was an honest person - he could have easily took the money and retire....to someplace that has a very low cost of living....far on the other side of the earth...that looks "S" shaped...rhymes with vette spam (sort of).

My VN girlfriend in N.C. bought food for this person and he cursed her out and said he rather have money. Luckily for him, it wasn't me he cursed at because I would gave him a tongue lashing he would never forget.
