The third installment in our neverending saga of feeding babies. This time, it's the Christmas Edition! We're going to do another motorbike convoy charity run before Christmas.
Who: Expats and Expat-friends (locals) who want to make a difference.
What: Charity convoy to bring food (formula) to babies at an orphanage.
When: 7 O'clock Sunday morning, December 22, 2013 until you get sick of playing with babies.
Where: Starting in HCMC, we'll convoy to the an orphange in Đồng Nai Province
Why: To feed and play with abandoned babies, get expats out of the city, make a difference, get in the CHRISTMAS SPIRIT of Charity (Even Scrooge got it in the end).
How: Meet at Sài Gòn Bridge (Cầu Sài Gòn) to convoy via motorbike carrying cans of formula to the orphanage. While at orphanage, we will play with babies.
This is a repeat of the same event that was done on September 29, 2013 as well as November 17, 2013. The last two runs were both successful. Each run, we were able to bring about 20 large canisters of baby formula. Usually 1 large can can feed one baby for a month so a run typically restocks the pantry for 2-3 months. Forumula is essential as it provides the nutrition needed to grow the baby's brain that would otherwise be provided by his/her mother's natural milk. CFB aims for 20 cans per run.
Cost = Typically at least one 900g large can baby formula (around 220,000 VND or $11) and any loose change you want to donate (we'll pool it and stick it in a red envelope this time).
BUT! If you find it a little difficult to plunk down 220,000 VND, it's okay. You can still come and help deliver the formula as well as play with the babies. CFB just submitted a mimi-grant application to the Consular Club Ho Chi Minh City asking for at least a 10 can donation.
CFB needs people who have motorbikes! So all your students...hope on board!
Here's the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) for more details:
Could you please give a little more information as to the address of the orphanage?
The orphanage we will be going to is called Chùa Diệu Pháp located at Tân Cang hamlet, Phước Tân commune, Long Thành district, Đồng Nai province (ấp Tân Cang, xã Phước Tân, huyện Long Thành, tỉnh Đồng Nai). It is about 10 minutes from the Mango Garden Resort (Du Lịch Sinh Thái Vườn Xoài).
Also is the orphanage in a temple?
It's a compound with a worship area in the front and the back area is where the kids live. About 5-8 Buddhist nuns run the place with a few hired helpers.
How many hour are we expected to be on the road, to and fro?
The last convoy there took about 2-1/2 hours total, with 1.5 hours driving. From HCMC to Big C at the Hà Nội Highway and Vũng Tàu Highway crossing in Biên Hòa City, it took an hour and the driving from Big C to the orphanage was about 30 minutes. We rested, ate fresh bread, and bought formula at Big C for about an hour. Coming back is on your own so you can "pedal to the metal" if you like or mosey at a leisure pace taking in the sights.
What time do you estimate you get to the orphanage?
Around 10:00 AM
How much time are we expected to be spending there?
You're free to leave on your own after you play with the babies. But generally on Sunday's the temple will invite any guests that come to hang around and eat their Bánh xèo (kind of like a Vietnamese Omelette made from batter instead of eggs).
Usually 1/2 a day or you can block out your calendar from 7 AM to 2 PM to include the driving to and fro.
What activities can we do or can't we do?
You can play with babies, pick em up, sniff em (I'm a baby crack-addict) because studies have shown that touching is how babies feel loved. You can take pictures. After you're done, you can wander around the orphanage and check out the bigger kids and adults. It can get overwhelming with all the sadness so I just focus on the babies.
That's pretty much it. The main focus is to bring formulas to feed the babies because they don't have natural milk from their mothers.
Can you just give me the address so I can go there myself?
You shouldn't go there by yourself before the Convoy introduces you. It's for the safety of the kids. After you have been introduced for the first time, you can feel free to go back to the orphanage on any other Sundays when they receive group-visitors. However, for the initial journey, you need to stay with the convoy and arrive as a group. We will need to "check in" (receiving of the guests and presentation of gifts) with the staff there before we go to the nursery room.
